“Overall a lovely week.”

The house is in a perfect spot. The garden is beautiful However, the hob didn't work well, there were issues with cleanliness and the windows in the downstairs bedroom didn't open. Also, as someone else mentioned, you had to go through one bedroom to get to another. No basics were left for us on our arrival. The cupboards were bare. Having said all of this, we would still return as it worked well for our party of 9.It was close to the local pub and beaches and we all enjoyed our stay..

“Lovely cottage and garden in a great position BUT Beds uncomfortable.”

Downstairs room double bed had a single sheet as the bottom sheet!! Mattress and pillows need replacing. One slat was lying on the floor No openable window and a very musty smell Other beds reported as uncomfortable The cooker is in urgent need of replacement, the hob is not fit for purpose when cooking for 8 people Freezer was iced up and too small for a party of 8. I had great difficulty in getting pre-holiday information from the booking company

“A lovely house spoilt by very poor management.”

Not all beds made up on arrival. Sand in one bed which was made up on arrival. Big cobwebs in downstairs shower room. Lounge smelt of wet dog. Broken hoover. Whole large window frame missing from summer house, so unusable. Heating left turned completely off, despite being an extremely cold June & control awkward to find. Everything reported at beginning of stay. Only issue resolved during our stay was the beds. It took 3 phone calls and over a month to eventually be offered £60 compensation, which is laughable. So disappointing. Northumbrian Country Cottages/Sykes & the owners need to do an awful lot better for the prices they charge!

Thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback. We’re really sorry to read about your experience. The property is normally ready for guests at the time of check in and we are sorry to hear that beds weren’t made. This has been picked up with the cleaner along with the feedback on cobwebs. NCCC have agreed that this wasn’t acceptable but did get to the property to resolve within an hour of being alerted to the issue. They will however be increasing their volume of pre arrivals checks to mitigate future issues. In addition the hoover has also been replaced. The weather in June has been very changeable and we wouldn’t normally leave the heating on unless it has been extremely cold, which it wasn’t at that time. Once again we are sorry that you experienced these issues whilst on holiday at Newton Cottage. Property Owner

“Perhaps you could consider informing guests that two bedrooms are adjoining and access through one is needed.”

That was a surprise to 5 couples. But this is a fantastic stay for 10 and there are few in the area. Bathrooms are excellent as is the location, comfort and garden. Perhaps advise guests to bring shampoos and salt!

“Our fourth visit so we have previously loved Newton Cottage.”

But this time was a disappointment. We understand the need to raise prices but didn’t expect an accompanying drop in quality. First, the “welcome pack” - four dishwasher tablets. Yes, we’re not joking. That was it. For a fortnight’s stay. Then not one cleaning product provided and no tea, coffee, sugar, nothing! I’ve never seen such empty cupboards. Next, cleaning and maintenance. Dust and dirt under everything you lifted, mirrors filthy, fan in main bathroom so dirty it was barely working. Sofas not plumped. Garden full of weeds. Loose patio stone we reported 18 months ago still loose. Outside light dangling upside down on a wire. Curtain pole in large bedroom splits in the middle (it was doing this two and a half years ago). And talking of curtains, they’re hanging off with missing hooks in many rooms, worn paper thin in others. Finally, a few lumps of coal was all that was left for the woodburner and open fire. No welcome pack of kindling and logs, like every other place we have stayed. So all in all, crushingly disappointing. Hopefully the owners will read this. Because they have a beautiful house that deserves better.

“A lovely, spacious property in an excellent location with a huge, beautiful garden and attractive patio area.”

Very clean on the whole though a couple of areas had been missed - we had to clean the fridges on arrival. I also do think that for a property like this provision of very basic supplies (toilet paper, hand soap etc) would be a welcome addition.

“Best Northumberland holiday cottage I have stayed in.”

Spacious bathrooms, showers and well appointed kitchen. Excellent outside space with a great patio area with views down to the sea. Location quiet and picturesque with dog friendly pubs on the doorstep. Probably some of the best beaches in the country within walking distance.

We were fortunate with the weather and so could enjoy all the facilities. Also it was just a short walk to the beach and two dog friendly pubs. Comfy beds and everything we needed was provided.

We found everything to be absolutely top notch, kitchen was particularly well equipped. The summerhouse was a real treat, and all the mod cons were easy to use. We will definitely be returning.

The property

Newton Cottage is an outstanding detached stone built cottage situated in a wonderful setting overlooking the coast at Low Newton by the Sea, on the outskirts of High Newton.

Finished to a very high standard, the cottage provides very spacious and attractive accommodation for up to 10 people with 2 living rooms, 3 bathrooms, a beautiful large enclosed garden and ample private parking.

The magnificent sandy beach and bay at Low Newton is a short walk away and there are also other secluded beaches nearby. GROUND FLOOR Living/dining room open plan with oak flooring, multi fuel stove, plasma screen TV/DVD, dining tables and chairs and door to patio.

Steps up to kitchen. Living room with TV, open fire in Inglenook fireplace and beams. Kitchen with double electric oven, fridge, microwave, dishwasher and iPod docking station. Utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, sink unit, clothes airer and small freezer. Shower room with shower WC and basin. Bedroom 1 with double bed and beams. FIRST FLOOR Bedroom 2 with king-size bed, sea views and beamed ceiling.

Leads to Bedroom 3 Bedroom 3 with king-size bed, sea views and beamed ceiling.

The small coastal village of Newton is situated on Northumberland's Heritage Coastline between the popular fishing villages of Craster, famous for its kippers, and Beadnell. Beadnell Bay offers excellent sandy beaches and there are spectacular coastal paths with wonderful scenery. The village has a pub which serves food and the historic town of Alnwick is only a short drive away.
