“Lovely little property, great base for visiting Northumberland.”

There are some lovely touches, welcome gifts of biscuits, milk and fudge and the cupboard full of condiments. We did have issues with the hot water, needed to use the override on the boiler to get a hot shower but in all fairness we did not tell the owners as we weren’t there long. Sky was a fab extra, Wi-Fi was fast and I would recommend the Old School Room to anyone thinking of a visit.

“The cottage was a great place to explore the surrounding beautiful coast and countryside.”

And we also had a wedding at the lovely Linden Hall which is just up the road. It is a lovely little village and a week there had us all feeling calm and relaxed. The only problem we had was with the Sky which Scott sorted out quickly and we had a good natter with him at the time also. Although it wasn't a problem to us, if two couples stopped there, it might be awkward going through the bedroom to get to the toilet ! All in all a lovely stay with friendly and helpful hosts and we would recommend it and would love to come again.

The property is very comfortable and well equipped although a freezer compartment in the fridge would have been useful. Any issues were dealt with quickly and efficiently and we will definitely consider returning in the future.

Shared garden but we didn’t see anyone the whole time we were there which was nice. Lovely size too for our 2 dogs. Stay was perfect lovely location, quite area, clean cottage. Only downside was the closest takeaways or supermarkets were in Morpeth but we actually liked it, it added to the experience being away from everything. All in all, 10/10 would definitely stay again. All great as usual apart from flaky wifi a couple of days, but this is something outside the owners control. Longhorsley is ideally situated for trips around the county, and Morpeth is only 10 minutes away if you want retail therapy. Local pub does good meals also. An ideal spot to explore the county from. Highly recommended.

We arrived to a lovely welcome pack of essentials plus treats for our dog. The home was spotless and had everything you could possibly need and more. The use of the garden was lovely... you got to watch the village life go by over a cuppa of a morning. Clare and Scott go above and beyond to make your stay as comfortable and carefree making this place a must for anyone looking for a bit of Northumbrian beauty. We will definitely be returning.

“This is a lovely little cottage in a peaceful location, which is also great for travelling around Northumberland across to the coast and the national park.”

The Village Shop does lovely freshly made sandwiches and a great breakfast in a box. The welcome pack in the cottage was really generous with bread, milk, margarine, biscuits, fudge, apple juice, hand made dog biscuits and lots of bits and bobs such as shower gel, condiments etc. We visited Craster and did the walk to Dunstanburgh Castle, Cragside and walked up to the lakes, Wallington with its lovely walled garden and river walk, Druridge Bay which is a great beach for the dogs, we visited Amble and had a mooch around the harbour and shopping pods. All in all we had a nice relaxing break.

We have read your feedback and would like to respond with regards to your comments. Due to the cottage being situated on a quiet side gravel road it is used between 0830-0900 and 1500-1530 for locals to drop off/collect their children from the local lower school. After these times there is easy parking at the front of the property and the road is only used by people living within the immediate area. Regarding security of the cottage part of the charm of the 17th Century Grade 2 A listed cottage is that it maintains the original sash windows with all the latches being in full working order. The door locks have also been recently upgraded. We also have installed a high spec security system which is situated at the back and at the front of the cottage . The electric gates on the back of the property ensures that the garden and the rear of the cottage is secure. Property Owner

“We had a good feeling about The Old School room upon booking and, my word, we weren't disappointed.”

Where do I start - The building on this quiet little road, facing the walled vicarage has been around since 1751. We were situated in what was the old reading room. It was a joy to behold. Small, but big enough for the 2 of us and plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. Very well appointed for cooking (although we only had breakfast indoors), relaxation with many games stored away and topped off with Sky TV. The single beds were very comfortable aided and abetted with 2 fluffy pillows to sink into. We did a couple of walks from the doorstep and quenched our thirst and appetite at the Shoulder of Mutton, a must for Real Ale enthusiasts. The location is ideal for touring up and down the coast where we managed to concoct a few nice circular walks of varying distances. Morpeth, only 7 miles away, is a lovely clean & compact town with the Old Bakehouse off Newgate Street well worth a visit for a hearty lunch. It was our 4th visit to explore the beautiful Northumberland area and the The Old School Room will certainly feature in our plans.

“When we arrived everything was ready for us including the very kind milk, bread, wine and cookies, With it being the day before Christmas eve owners, Miss Clare Fielder and Mr Scott Percy had left 2 selection boxes on the children's bed and also a Santa hat which we thought was a lovely touch.”

The place was beautifully decorated out for Christmas. Everything was available to us and really was a "home from home" Spotlessly clean and tidy, warm and cosy with a real cottage feel to it so well planned out, hard to believe everything fitted in two rooms ! Every possible electrical appliance you could want including hair dryer Even had a hot water bottle !! Loved it all and a real gem, fully intend to stay here again on our next property search stay cannot really praise it and it's owner's enough to justify our pleasure in staying here. “We really enjoyed our holiday and the cottage was beautifully decorated and very clean.”

We really appreciated the free biscuits, milk and bread on arrival. The bottle of wine in the fridge was a lovely gesture too, although we didn't drink it on this occasion. A few minor improvements would have improved our experience: - somewhere to hang up our coats. - the sofa bed was pretty uncomfortable unfortunately. Alas, I fear this is just sofa beds, and it's no worse that others I have slept on. Mountains of cushions all over the place meant the place was very untidy in the morning. - we couldn't shut the bathroom window fully. - Because of the shape of the window the blinds didn't go all the way to the top and consequently the bedroom was very light. However, we understand that other options would detract from the lovely decorating. Worth bearing in mind if you or your children need darkness to go to sleep. - we didn't notice there was no dishwasher! Oops! These are all minor suggestion however. The cottage was well equipped, clean, and comfortable with a nice selection of books and DVDs too. It's a lovely village in a great location provided you have access to a car, and there is a lovely play park for the children a short walk away. Thank you.

The property

This Longhorsley cottage is part of a delightful, converted, stone-built, former schoolhouse adjoining the owner's home in the pretty village, ideally situated in the heart of the Northumberland countryside, just 14 miles south of Alnwick and 5 miles north of Morpeth.

The Old School Room was the school and parish room up until 1751, and still has its original bell tower.

This cottage is comfortably furnished and well-appointed throughout with wooden floors and original windows, and makes a great base for exploring this delightful area.

To the rear there is a pretty garden with furniture, an ideal spot for unwinding after a long day out and about.

The friendly village of Longhorsley has everything you could want for a stay in the countryside; within walking distance is the local pub, Shoulder of Mutton, serving good food and real ale, and a useful local store.

Longframlington is only four miles north on the A697 with its award-winning grocer's store and Rothbury Butchers at Highley Gate.

Bywell shooting ground and Burgham Park Golf and Leisure Club lie just two miles to the west, whilst a few miles' drive north will take you to Thrunton Wood, just the spot for a woodland walk or mountain biking - the spectacular views of the Cheviots from the top are worth the effort.

To the west lies Rothbury, with Cragside hall, the first home in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity, and a very popular National Trust attraction.

A little further away enjoy the delights of Northumberland's ancient castles including Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Alnwick with its amazing gardens.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is 40 miles north, here you can visit the Lindisfarne’s 16th century castle – the island is accessible from the mainland at low tide by means of a causeway.

This lovely cottage makes the ideal base for touring all of Northumberland's attractions throughout the year.

Rothbury 9 miles; Alnwick 14 miles.

The pretty village of Longhorsley sits at the heart of rural Northumberland, between the Cheviots and the coast and provides great access to a range of great walks and cycle routes. The village offers a local pub serving good food, a hairdressers and a local store. The bustling village of Rothbury lies just 9 miles to the west, nestling between the Simonside and Lordenshaw Hills with the River Coquet meandering through the centre. Brinkburn Priory is a pleasant, short drive away - a restored Augustinian Priory in a most lovely setting beside the River Coquet. On the outskirts of Rothbury is the National Trust’s Cragside House and Gardens, whilst the Heritage Coast with its many grand, historic castles and miles of golden sandy beaches is just 20 minutes’ drive to the east. The historic town of Alnwick, with its magnificent castle and garden, lies just 14 miles to the north and is a great day out for all the family. With the spectacular National Park also within easy reach, this is the perfect spot for exploring Northumberland or taking a relaxing break!
