“Overall Jara is a lovely property in a great setting.”

Loads of space and light, comfortable and great garden. However there are several shortcomings that need addressing. Reading previous reviews it is clear that some of these have been flagged before (on more than one occasion) but still not addressed. I called the agency (Northumbria Coast & Country Cottages) in advance to check on some of these and after being told they would get back to me they failed to do so. Towards the end of our stay I emailed the agency in detail about various issues ...

Towards the end of our stay I emailed the agency in detail about various issues as I preferred to communicate directly rather than via a public review, however this was not even acknowledged hence this review. Issue flagged are listed below: 1) Still no breadknife despite this being flagged by previous visitors and me phoning in advance to ascertain whether one had been acquired. Not exactly a disaster but disappointing. We bought one from the hardware shop in Seahouses and left it at the property. 2) No corkscrew. Again, not a disaster but small things like this do make a difference especially when paying almost £900 per week in the off-season. 3) No hand-wash in the kitchen, no surface spray and only a tiny little cheap washing up liquid thing that does about two washes. No wonder people leave things greasy/dirty – something fed back by previous visitors and which unfortunately we also found to be the case. 4) Leaking trap under kitchen sink with soggy box of stuff and adjacent mouse droppings. We cleaned all this up. 5) Main bedroom window does not seal properly along whole lower edge meaning howling wind noise and full-on cold breeze that can be felt from bed (not helped by curtains – see below). 6) Curtains in most/all areas are not properly hung due to damaged/decayed attachments meaning they don’t close properly. 7) Lack of any mirror downstairs and none in one of the upstairs bedrooms or the toilet. 8) No shower mat – it does get slippery and it’s a cheap and easy fix to a real hazard. 9) Not enough kindling/logs left to light fire on first night despite being advised there would be. 10) References in the information folder to various things (including additional kindling/logs) being stored in the “summerhouse (shed)” seem to be erroneous as there is no summerhouse/shed.

About the location

BAMBURGH

Seahouses 3.5 miles; Beadnell 5.1 miles; Alnwick 16.9 miles.

The village’s sweeping sandy beaches and dramatic fortress - Bamburgh Castle - make Bamburgh one of Northumberland’s major visitor attractions. The castle can be seen for miles and dominates this part of the county’s coastline. Today it remains home to the family of the great Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, and is open to the public on a daily basis. Although overshadowed by the great castle, Bamburgh village is picturesque with neat grey stone cottages facing a manicured village green. There are excellent pubs, hotels with restaurants and a small selection of village shops. There are golf courses in Bamburgh and nearby Seahouses, and within easy reach are more wide sandy beaches, lovely fishing villages, stunning castles and coastal islands to explore along the dramatic Heritage Coast. There are numerous other attractions also a short drive away, including the famous Alnwick Castle and Gardens and the historic walled border town, Berwick-upon-Tweed. A superb base for exploring Northumberland.
